Cart Rules
A few simple rules keep our crew safe, our equipment running, and your pickup reliable every week. Read through these before you fill your cart.
How to Prepare Your Cart
Follow these steps and you'll never miss a pickup.
Bag Everything
No loose or unbagged trash. Every item must be in a bag and tied shut before it goes in the cart.
Break Down Boxes
All cardboard boxes must be broken down flat. Full boxes take up space and prevent the lid from closing.
50 Pounds Per Bag Max
Each bag should be 50 pounds or less. Heavy bags cause injury to our crew.
Lid Must Close
If the lid doesn't close completely, the cart won't empty. Remove extra bags and we'll pick them up next week.
Place at the Curb
Put your cart at the curb the night before your pickup day. Keep it clear of cars, fences, and tree branches.
Broken Glass in a Box
Never put loose broken glass in the cart. Place it in a cardboard box, tape it shut, and label it if you can.
Accepted Items
- Regular bagged household trash
- Every item in a bag, tied shut
- Each bag 50 pounds or less
- Cart lid closes completely
- Fully dried paint cans with lids off
Never Put These In Your Cart
These items can hurt our crew, damage our equipment, or harm the environment. If it's on this list, find another way to dispose of it.
Batteries (Any Kind)
Can cause fires in our trucks and at the landfill. Drop them off at a hardware store or recycling center.
Spray Paint & Pressurized Cans
Can explode when crushed. Take to your county's hazardous waste facility.
Ceramic, Clay & Terracotta Pots
They don't break down and damage landfill equipment.
Scrap Metal & Large Metal Pieces
Damages our truck equipment. Take to a scrap yard or the county landfill.
Wet or Liquid Paint
Hazardous material. Let it dry completely or take to your county's hazardous waste facility.
Hot Ashes or Coals
Fire hazard. Make sure everything is completely cold before bagging.
Tires
Take to an auto shop or the county landfill. They jam our equipment.
Large Appliances
Washers, dryers, fridges, etc. Schedule bulk pickup with your county or take to the landfill.
Construction Debris
Concrete, lumber, drywall, dirt, roofing materials. Take to your county landfill.
Hazardous Materials
Chemicals, pesticides, solvents, motor oil. Take to your county's hazardous waste facility.
Medical & Biohazard Waste
Needles, sharps, and biohazard materials. Use your pharmacy's sharps container program.
Propane Tanks & Compressed Gas
Explosion risk. Return to the store where you bought it or take to a propane dealer.
Electronics
TVs, monitors, computers. Take to an e-waste recycling center or electronics retailer.
Loose Broken Glass
Cuts our crew's hands and tires. Place in a cardboard box and tape it shut.
Yard Waste
Grass clippings, leaves, and trimmings never go inside the cart. Fairfield Plantation residents can bag it in paper yard-waste bags and set it next to the cart instead — see the yard waste bag rule below.
Yard Waste Bags Next to Your Cart
Fairfield Plantation residents only. This curbside yard-waste bag pickup is exclusive to Fairfield Plantation. If you're not a Fairfield Plantation resident, this pickup isn't available to you.
If you're a Fairfield Plantation resident, yard waste still doesn't go inside your cart, but you can leave a limited number of paper bags next to it and we'll take those too — as long as they're the right kind.
We'll collect these (Fairfield Plantation only)
- • Up to 5 paper bags per pickup
- • 15-gallon paper lawn and leaf bags
- • Filled with yard waste only — leaves, grass clippings, small branches, plant trimmings
We won't collect these
- • Yard waste bags from outside Fairfield Plantation
- • 100-gallon contractor or construction-size bags
- • Any bag filled with building materials or construction debris
- • More than 5 bags at your cart
A bag sitting next to your cart isn't an automatic pickup — you have to be a Fairfield Plantation resident, and it has to be a paper yard-waste bag in the right size. Large contractor bags of building materials will be left behind, even if they're set out on your regular trash day.
What About Bulk Items?
Large appliances, construction debris, and other bulky items don't belong in your trash cart. Your county landfill is the right place for these. (Yard waste has its own curbside rule, but it's Fairfield Plantation residents only — see paper bags next to your cart, above.)
