Tornado Season in West Georgia: Keeping Your Trash Service Safe and On Schedule

Bowdon Disposal

West Georgia Sits Right in Dixie Alley

If you’ve lived in Carroll County, Haralson County, or Heard County for any length of time, you know April and May can get intense. We’re sitting right in what meteorologists call “Dixie Alley” — the southeastern extension of Tornado Alley where warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico collides with cool, dry air masses moving down from the north.

April is historically our most dangerous month for tornadoes, and we’re right in the thick of it. As your local trash service, Bowdon Disposal has learned a thing or two about keeping our Red Angels safe while maintaining service during severe weather season.

How Severe Weather Affects Your Trash Pickup

When the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for Carroll, Haralson, or Heard counties, our trucks come off the road immediately. No exceptions. The safety of our Red Angels — the drivers and crew who serve your neighborhood every week — comes first.

Here’s what happens during severe weather events:

Tornado Warnings and Watches

  • Tornado Warning: All trucks return to base immediately. Service resumes when the warning expires and conditions are safe.
  • Tornado Watch: Trucks continue normal routes but monitor conditions closely. If rotation appears on radar near any route, that truck heads to shelter.

High Wind Events

  • Sustained winds over 35 mph or gusts over 45 mph mean trucks stay parked. Empty trash carts become projectiles in high winds.
  • Your red cart should be secured or brought inside during high wind warnings.

Severe Thunderstorms

  • Lightning within 10 miles of any route means that truck seeks shelter until the storm passes.
  • Heavy downpours that reduce visibility also pause service temporarily.

What to Do With Your Cart During Severe Weather

Your 95-gallon red cart can become a serious hazard in high winds. Here’s how to keep everyone safe:

Before the Storm

  • Bring your cart to a sheltered area if possible — garage, carport, or against your house
  • Secure the lid — high winds can rip lids off and send them flying
  • Don’t put your cart out if severe weather is forecast for your regular pickup day

During the Storm

  • Stay inside — never chase a cart that’s blowing around
  • Keep pets indoors — scared animals may hide near or under carts

After the Storm

  • Check for damage before putting your cart back out
  • Clear debris from around your normal cart placement area
  • Be patient — we’ll get to your pickup as soon as it’s safe

Storm Debris and What Goes in Your Cart

After severe weather passes through West Georgia, you’ll likely have cleanup to do. But not all storm debris can go in your regular trash cart.

What Your Cart CAN Handle

  • Small branches and twigs (under 3 feet long)
  • Leaves and small organic debris
  • Damaged outdoor decorations or lightweight items
  • Storm-soaked regular household trash

What Needs Special Handling

  • Large tree limbs or trunks — contact your county for debris pickup programs
  • Roofing materials, siding, or construction debris — requires special disposal
  • Damaged appliances — cannot go in regular pickup
  • Hazardous materials exposed by storm damage (paint, chemicals, etc.)

Remember: ceramic pots and planters that get broken in storms still can’t go in your cart — they’re too heavy and can injure our crew when the cart tips into the truck.

How We Communicate Weather Delays

Bowdon Disposal keeps customers informed through multiple channels during severe weather:

  • Facebook and Instagram (@bowdon_disposal) — real-time updates during weather events
  • TikTok (@bowdon.disposal) — quick video updates when conditions change
  • Customer portal — check your account for route-specific delays
  • Phone: (470) 943-3355 during business hours (Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM)

We post updates as soon as we know service will be affected, and again when normal pickup resumes.

Makeup Service After Weather Delays

When severe weather forces us to delay or cancel pickup on your regular day, we don’t leave you hanging. Here’s how makeup service works:

  • Next business day pickup when possible
  • Extended pickup hours to catch up after weather delays
  • Route adjustments to serve areas that missed pickup first

If you’re a Trash Butler customer, we’ll still handle everything — you don’t need to move your cart or worry about timing. Our Red Angels will take care of it when we return to your area.

Staying Weather-Aware in West Georgia

Living in Dixie Alley means staying informed. Here are the best resources for West Georgia weather:

  • National Weather Service Atlanta — official warnings and watches
  • Local emergency management for Carroll, Haralson, and Heard counties
  • Weather apps with location-specific alerts
  • NOAA Weather Radio — especially important in rural areas
