Storm Season Safety: Preparing Your Trash Service for West Georgia Weather
Bowdon Disposal
Spring Storm Season Has Arrived in West Georgia
If you’ve lived in Carroll, Haralson, or Heard County for any length of time, you know what April brings: unpredictable weather. One day it’s 75 degrees and sunny, the next you’re watching tornado warnings scroll across your TV screen. West Georgia sits right in “Dixie Alley,” and April is historically our most dangerous month for severe weather.
At Bowdon Disposal, we’ve been through it all since our founding three years ago. Our Red Angels have navigated ice storms, torrential rain, high winds, and yes — tornado warnings. Here’s what every West Georgia resident needs to know about protecting their trash service during storm season.
Securing Your Red Cart Before the Storm
Those 95-gallon red carts are built tough, but Mother Nature doesn’t mess around. When severe weather is forecast:
Move your cart to a sheltered area if possible. Behind your house, in your garage, or against a sturdy structure. High winds can send an empty cart tumbling down the street — and nobody wants to chase their trash cart through the neighborhood after a storm.
If you can’t move it, weigh it down. A few bags of trash or even some rocks in the bottom will help keep it grounded. Just make sure the lid can still close properly.
Never leave your cart at the curb during a severe weather warning. It becomes a projectile that can damage cars, mailboxes, or worse — hurt someone.
Trash Butler customers, you’re covered. Our Red Angels handle cart placement and retrieval for you, but during severe weather warnings, we’ll secure your cart in the safest location possible around your property.
What Happens to Pickup During Severe Weather?
Safety comes first — always. When the National Weather Service issues tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings with damaging winds, or winter weather advisories, our trucks come off the roads. We’re not risking our crew’s safety, and we don’t want to be that trash truck you see on the news getting tossed around by a tornado.
We communicate delays immediately through our Facebook page, Instagram (@bowdon_disposal), and customer notifications. If your regular pickup day gets pushed back due to weather, you’ll know as soon as we do.
Most delays are just 24 hours. Unless we’re dealing with widespread damage or extended power outages, we’re usually back on schedule the next day. Our Red Angels are locals — they live here too, and they’re eager to get back to work serving their neighbors.
After the Storm: What We Can and Can’t Handle
Storm cleanup generates a lot of debris, but not all of it belongs in your red cart. Here’s the breakdown:
Your Cart CAN Handle:
- Small branches and twigs (must fit with lid closed)
- Leaves and yard debris (bagged)
- Regular household items damaged in the storm
- Food that spoiled during power outages (bagged and tied)
Your Cart CANNOT Handle:
- Large tree limbs or whole branches
- Roofing materials, siding, or construction debris
- Broken ceramic planters or pots (too heavy and sharp)
- Damaged appliances or electronics
- Anything that prevents the lid from closing completely
For major storm debris, contact Carroll County, Haralson County, or Heard County directly. Each county typically sets up temporary debris collection programs after significant weather events. Don’t assume we can take it — call us at (470) 943-3355 if you’re unsure about any item.
Why Local Matters During Emergencies
When storms hit West Georgia, you want a trash company that knows the area. Our drivers live in Carrollton, Bremen, Bowdon, and Franklin. They know which roads flood first, which neighborhoods lose power most often, and how to navigate around downed trees.
The big corporate companies? Their drivers might be coming from Atlanta or Birmingham. They don’t know that the back road to Centralhatchee always washes out, or that the Villa Rica route has those low-hanging branches that come down in every windstorm.
Bowdon Disposal drivers know because this is home. When you call our office during a storm emergency, you’re talking to people who are dealing with the same weather you are.
